Patan Patola — Living Cultural Tradition

"The supreme mathematical double-ikat silk weave of Gujarat where warp and weft are individually resist-dyed before mounting on the loom."

Patan Patola (Gujarati: પાટણના પટોળા) is one of the world's most intricate and mathematically demanding textile arts, originating from Patan, the medieval capital of Gujarat. Unlike printed fabrics or single ikats where only warp or weft is tied, Patan Patola employs double-ikat: both warp and weft threads are individually tied and resist-dyed using natural vegetable pigments according to precise geometric calculations before a single thread is mounted on the wooden slant loom. When woven, the dyed points meet with millimetric alignment, producing identical chromatic vibrancy on both the face and reverse of the fabric. Practiced by the Salvi weaver guild under royal Solanki patronage since the 12th century, crafting a single Patola sari requires 6 to 12 months of collaborative labour.
