Toda Sacred Dairy Rituals & Shola Coexistence — Living Cultural Tradition

"The indigenous pastoralist Toda community of the Nilgiri Hills, whose religion centers entirely upon consecrated water buffalo herds and sacred temple dairies."

The Toda (Toda: Thōr) are a small, distinct indigenous pastoralist community inhabiting the high-altitude plateau of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. Living in symbiotic balance with the delicate shola-grassland ecosystem for millennia, Toda religious life is unique: they worship no anthropomorphic idols; rather, their highest spiritual life centers upon the sacred long-horned water buffalo and the ritual churn of the temple dairy (Ti). Toda dairies are ranked in strict sacred hierarchies, overseen by consecrated ascetic dairy-priests (Palol) who observe extreme purity disciplines, living in isolation within barrel-vaulted, thatch-roofed temple huts (Munds). The community is equally famed for Pukhoor (Toda embroidery, awarded GI status), characterized by striking black and red geometric cross-stitch executed on unbleached white cotton shawls (Poothkuli).
